Last July 31, 2018, we had a privilege to tour three out of five pioneer Gawad Kalinga (GK) communities in Bagong Silang, Caloocan which were started by our Founder, Tony Meloto, and his amazing team.
We visited SM City North Edsa community which was built to celebrate the 25th anniversary of that well-known mall, USA Hope by philantropists from Port Arthur Beaumont, Texas, and Tala where 36 families with recovering leprous patients are sheltered.
This immersion team was organized by Leah Sy in her last day with GK Enchanted Farm and we’re graced by our tour guide Tita Tessie and Tito Dale Lugue who were building these dream communities with Tito Tony Meloto since early 90’s.
Through this immersion, I learned from Leah that the talks to build the first GK village started as early as 1980’s, but the first house was only put in place in 1995.
Through the stories of transformed lives shared by Tito Dale, we’ve gained a living hope that what we’re working for, though we’re just new workers, are not in vain and will always result to something good for everyone involved.
One community officer said, “Dati nung wala pa silang bahay, hirap talaga silang maghanap-buhay. Pero nung nagka-bahay na sila, mas nagsipag talaga sila para mapaganda ang bahay nila.”
Gawad Kalinga’s initial efforts to help the poorest of the poor have become fruitfuil through five strategies, Tito Dale said:
These five pillar strategies began the now 2,500 strong GK villages all over the Philippines.
The fight to end poverty for 5 million Filipino families by 2024 continues, and we’ve only just begun.
